Guarding the entrance into the exhibition for the Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor and His Legacy, at the Asia Civilisation Museum, are works by Singapore pop-art artist, Justine Lee. Just before you enter into the inner gallery to catch the real Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor and His Legacy, an army of all-white, modernised version of the terracotta soldiers greats you at the entrance.
Life After Death (冥世) – An Installation by Justin Lee, was the part of the artist’s previous installation East & West, which was acquired by the Singapore Art Museum in 2010. Fitted with black headphones and red scarves, the terracotta army are flanked by graceful fairy-like maidens armed with modern technologies and lifestyle goods and a pair of cranes. A symbol of a individual who values traditional culture but embracing the modern lifestyles needs. The large platform light-boxes impart an eternal effect to the sculptures as they seem to be floating on clouds.
Justin often blends East and West influences of past cultures into his works. His works are contemporary but with a touch whimsical surprises. Life After Death (冥世) is also a continuation from his 2008 Double Happiness collection, a 5th solo exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum.
