After being quiet for the last eight months, 2902 Gallery has found a brand new space at 222 Queen Street. Nestled within the Arts & Cultural district, the new area will feature photographs, video and installation artworks.
The exhibition Zoological by these nine artists: Ang Song Nian, Wimo Bayang, Heman Chong, John Clang, Nguan, Sherman Ong, Liana Yang, Joel Yuen, and Robert Zhao Renhui.
Moving into the heart of the city, Zoological is the opening showcase for the gallery space. Featuring photographs, video, and installation works by local and regional artists, the exhibition surveys the human imprint on the urban landscape through various vantage points. The act of photographing serves as a form distanciation amid the numbing monotony and frenetic pace of city life. Within a framed situation, a space of meditation between the photographer and his subject emerges. Who is the observer and the observed? Besides blurring boundaries of power and position, Zoological also implies an order of disorder, artificial nature and tamed wilderness, and an uncannily familiar exoticism.
Performance by the talented Yen Pang interprets John Clang’s ‘Beon Sleeps’.
In recent months, Mr Yen Phang is the go-to-guy for performance-collab for artists~
We should clone him, sell the clones at Art Supply Stores. They will be a blessing for Artists! Was observing him shifting from being near the wall (7+pm) to being right in the middle of the entrance space (830pm)
John Clang sure know how to make his presence felt, even though he was in New York!

I finally got to meet the camera-shy artist – Ms Liana Yang. She showed us her catalogue & explain her series about her five cats in more detail. Explaining to us that beneath the visual is the duality of the Human/Cat relationship…and even more profound is some erotic cat pornography.
Robert Zhao assured us that no goldfish were harmed during his project. Dead fishes were collected from local aquariums.

Last but not least, I asked Gallery Director Ms Gwen Lee to share about the journey she went through with 2902 Gallery & the challenges of setting up a gallery space.
The most daunting challenge by most galleries and other business forms in Singapore is access and cost of space. Many compromises have to be made to make things happen, rather than not being flexible and not taking steps to advance. I look forward to future showcase and plan by 2902 Gallery. With its proximity to SOTA, NAFA & LASALLE, its outreach program and accessibility will be good for the future of Fine Art Photography.
The exhibition is ongoing till 19 May. The gallery’s new opening hours are 12noon –7pm (Tue – Sunday) and close on Mondays and Public Holidays.
