Art Moments Jakarta (3-5 May 2019), Indonesia’s leading contemporary art fair, will be featuring remarkable and iconic artworks from two leading artists, namely Heri Dono and Mr.
Leo Silitonga, founder and art curator of Art Moments Jakarta, said, “We are delighted to provide a platform in Indonesia to showcase the works by these two remarkable artists. Through Art Moments Jakarta’s programmes, we hope to provide unrivalled access and engagement with leading Asian and Indonesian artists. We are deeply grateful to the artists, their galleries and our partners for making this art fair possible.”
Heri Dono
Unquestionably the best known contemporary Indonesian artist from the late 1980s generation, Heri Dono will be showcasing three installations and two artworks at Art Moments Jakarta.
Born in Jakarta in 1960, Heri Dono is a leading contemporary artist and the first Indonesian to break into the global art scene in the early 1990s. To-date, he has participated in 31 international biennales, and is the only contemporary Indonesian artist to have been invited to the Biennale Arte’s own curatorial exhibition in 2003.
Heri is best known through his installations that stem from his works with Wayang, the most popular Javanese folk theater. This form of performance is unique to Indonesia and comprises a number of artistic and multi-sensory elements – visual arts, singing, music, storytelling, philosophy of life, social criticisms, and humor. Heri’s installations portray creations that draw new perceptions from this traditional art practice profoundly rooted in Indonesia. He effectively makes use of performance and visual arts to engage in tense dialogues with his audiences.
Mr.
Renowned pop artist Mr.’s neo-pop aesthetics works will be seen in Jakarta for the first time at Art Moments Jakarta. His vast works which span across paintings, sculptures, installations and videos, has already been seen in museums and gallery exhibitions worldwide including Tokyo, Paris, New York, Minneapolis, Chicago, Miami, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, and London.
Mr. draws upon the otaku culture (including manga comics, anime, sci-fi literature, and video games) as inspiration for many of his works. Associated with the superflat movement, he consistently draws his themes and motifs from the otaku subcultures. His cartoonish visions are essentially inhabited by young characters, which are meant to feelings of moe (a Japanese notion relating to the adoration of fictional figures). In a typical kawaii style, he blends childlike features with innocent undertones.
Contrasting with the bright cheerfulness of his all-powerful characters, a wider reflection upon solitude, social anxiety and fear further underlies his work. Namely, the chaotic environments, within which Mr. stages some of his exhibitions, echo both Japan’s traumatic loss during the Second World War and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Mr. will be represented by Galerie Perrotin at AMJ.
