Aspiring young talents with a passion for music, photography, moving images, and art & design are invited to apply for the 11th edition of Noise Singapore and its flagship mentorship programmes – the Noise Art Mentorship (NAM) and Noise Music Mentorship (NMM). Both mentorship programmes will now be spearheaded by industry partners and will last for six months, up from the previous four-month period.
SHARING SKILLS AND BUILDING INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE
Working closely with Noise Singapore to lead and manage the mentorship programmes will be three partners – Objectifs, OH! Open House and Thunder Rock School. Having partners on board will also enable the NAC to nurture our intermediaries.
The NAM will be managed by two partners – Objectifs will handle the Photography & Moving Images component, while OH! Open House will handle the Interdisciplinary Art component. Objectifs is a non-profit visual arts centre dedicated to photography and film that has been conducting programmes for students and emerging photographers, while OH! Open House, founders behind the popular art walk
of the same name, had most recently served as curators for the Noise Singapore 2015 mentee-led exhibition, “c. 2015 –”.
“We’re excited to further our relationship with Noise Singapore. The “c. 2015 –” exhibition reinforced our belief that Singapore’s raw artistic talents deserve to be challenged and showcased. This year, we have an even greater opportunity to lend our voice to the programme through collective sessions that bring together mentors from different disciplines, mentees, and the curatorial team. By encouraging open-minded and rigorous dialogue across art forms, we believe we can nurture these artists to expand the creative possibilities of their practices,” said Berny Tan, Assistant Curator, OH! Open
The NMM will see Thunder Rock School drive the music programme. They are a music-focused institute that gives aspiring musicians a head-start by connecting them with established players in Singapore’s music fraternity through courses and workshops.
“Having observed Noise Singapore since its inception, I have seen first-hand many eager, young and talented people come through the door, many of whom have gone on to become meaningful contributors and household names in the Singapore music scene. With this extended mentorship programme, I am very excited to have more time with the next batch of mentees, who, I am doubtless, will appreciate the benefits of a longer period of mentorship engagement,” said Leonard Soosay, Noise Singapore 2015 mentor and Production Advisor for NMM 2016.
MEANINGFUL INTERACTION VIA EXTENDED MENTORSHIP PERIODS
The longer six-month mentorship periods for the NAM and NMM will provide mentees additional time
to work closely with their mentors to prepare for their respective major showcases. With this extended duration, both Art and Music mentees can also look forward to more exposure throughout 2016 in the form of mini showcases and involvement in the curatorial process respectively.
For the NAM mentees, the new format will also see them deciding on the artistic direction of their work, as opposed to producing works for particular sets of themes. This affords the mentees greater and more meaningful responsibility throughout the mentorship period.
Besides offering mentorship opportunities, Noise Singapore is also a platform where young people get to showcase their creative talent. The Noise Singapore flagship visual arts exhibition featuring artworks submitted year-round, as well as concerts featuring Noise Alumni members, is set to take place this August to September.
On introducing these changes to Noise Singapore, Ms Aruna Johnson, Deputy Director, Arts and Youth, National Arts Council, says, “We want to build on Noise Singapore’s sustained success for over a decade in engaging youth with artistic aspirations. Extending the time that our young talents have with their mentors and partnering with intermediaries allows for deeper integration into the art and music ecosystem. I hope that as our youth artists interact and network with seasoned industry veterans, they will be inspired to discover a world of artistic possibilities.”
Registration for the 11th edition of Noise Singapore is now open. Applicants interested to participate in NAM and NMM, or artists keen to submit their works for consideration for the Noise Singapore 2016 Festival exhibition are advised to visit www.noisesingapore.com for more information.
