The latest edition of Arts in Your Neighbourhood (AYN), taking place from 10 to 27 March, returns with an emphasis on ‘play’ through an exciting line-up of 27 activities over three weeks, across 17 locations island-wide. People living and working in Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, Jurong, Yew Tee, Woodlands, Tanglin Halt, Bedok and Bishan can rediscover their neighbourhoods through diverse and interactive arts offerings.
In addition, this season will introduce a neighbourhood-specific focus, with six arts programmes taking place in Toa Payoh, of which two are new commissions drawing content and inspiration from its rich legacy as Singapore’s second-oldest satellite town.
REDISCOVERING NEIGHBOURHOODS
Members of the public can enjoy the arts while reliving their favourite childhood memories in Toa Payoh, as they gain a richer understanding of historically rich spaces and the people who live in them.
The Real Estates – A stunning visual tapestry of photographs contributed by more than 40 photography enthusiasts, where the public can contribute by penning down their thoughts and memories of Toa Payoh.
Arts Imprints Around My Neighbourhood – Embark on a unique music and storytelling trail with Young Artist Award Recipient Quek Ling Kiong and talented young musicians, as you reminisce about bygone days through iconic landmarks in Toa Payoh.
STRONG FOCUS ON INTERACTIVITY & PLAY
This edition seeks to break down barriers to enjoying the arts by engaging audiences through light-hearted and approachable activities:
3D Tic-Tac-Toe – Those looking to indulge their inner child can play within a giant 3-dimensional light-activated tic-tac-toe game at the Woodlands Civic Centre.
The Rainbow Toymaker – Younger audiences can acquaint themselves with Singapore’s best-loved retro games such as Five Stones and Pick-Up Sticks, in a larger-than-life theatre performance.
A RICH CULTURAL PALETTE
Members of the public can also look forward to works with a distinct multi-cultural flavour, such as CROSSING by Riduan Zalani with NADI Singapura and other established Singapore arts groups, which takes the audience on a journey through the sights and sounds of Singapore.
All activities are free; registration is required for Arts Imprints Around My Neighbourhood at http://aynmar2016artsimprints.peatix.com. For more details, please refer to the attached Programme Guide.
Background to Arts in Your Neighbourhood
The Arts in Your Neighbourhood (AYN) programme is part of the National Arts Council’s “Arts for All” initiative aimed at promoting self-expression, creativity and bonding through the arts by bringing it to where people live, work and play. AYN takes place over two seasons in a year. Established artists and arts groups present a series of interactive arts activities, across different genres – music, dance, theatre, visual and literary arts at different spaces across the island.
Artitute
is an online showcase and magazine covering Southeast Asia’s established and emerging visual artists and art scenes.
