Singapore artists, Heman Chong will be having an exhibition at Future Perfect, a contemporary art gallery in Gillman Baracks.
Titled, The Part in the Story Where We Lost Count of the Days (2), is a series of three exhibitions developed by Heman Chong that will occur over three spaces and cities: Rossi & Rossi in Hong Kong, Future Perfect in Singapore and The Reading Room in Bangkok. This series of exhibitions look at his practice as both a maker of objects and a facilitator of situations, focusing on ideas and processes that sit at the intersection of multiple genres: visual art, performance, writing, installation and science fiction.
At Future Perfect, viewers will encounter three new and recent works, each revealing aspects of Chong’s use of photography. The exhibition explores the multivalent role of the camera in his practice, and its precarious relationship with other artistic media.
‘A Short Story About Singapore (Volume 1)’ is the latest installment of Chong’s compulsive documentation of distinctively Singaporean sites and spaces. The series of 100 photos, to be shown in its entirety for the first time at Future Perfect, was conceived as a hypertextual web of untold short stories. ‘Telok Blangah Hill Park: A Survey’ is a photo-essay ‘written’ by Chong in 2008. The work circulates as both an art object and an artist book – a mobile, portable exhibition form. The artist will also present a brand new piece entitled ‘Monument For A Mystical Reality’, addressing the legacy and documentation of early Southeast Asian conceptualism.
A newly published monograph covering the last decade of Chong’s work will be launched at the opening reception on 26 July. Through commissioned texts and explanations of selected projects, the publication engages themes of fiction, futurism, language, representation, performance and circulation, situating the artist’s work within and across an array of disciplines, rather than evaluating it. Published by ArtAsiaPacific Magazine and edited by M+ Curator Pauline J. Yao, the book features new essays by Nav Haq, Ahmad Mashadi, Claudia Pestana, and Tirdad Zolghadr, and an illustrated project index by Amanda Lee Koe and Pauline J. Yao.
