NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore is pleased to announce its collaboration with Arts Fission in Shaman/Peasants –Dance of the Barefoot Guardians, its latest performance as part of the Centre’s ongoing Stagings series.
Cultural Medallion choreographer Angela Liong has created the dance work, Shaman/Peasants –Dance of the Barefoot Guardians as a response to the film and photographic works of NTU CCA Singapore’s current exhibition by acclaimed German artist Ulrike Ottinger, which capture and frame everyday life in China and Mongolia during the 1980s and 1990s.
Shaman/Peasants intercuts urban trance music with traditional sounds from China and Mongolia’s minority tribes, which have been deliberately selected to mirror and reflect Ottinger’s journey through the two countries. The performance sets a disparate cultural quilt work where shaman figures transgress through ancient and modern times, and an urbanite ensemble in blue and black garbs morphs between the ambivalent realms of cultural and political affinity.
Shaman/Peasants – Dance of the Barefoot Guardians is commissioned by NTU CCA Singapore and co-produced with Arts Fission.
